Gem Stolen?

I noticed today a missing level 8 gem from my main character armour
I have now replaced it from another hero

My question is: Can gems be stolen?

I thought I had a full set previously and cannot think that I would have taken that particular location out (although not dismissing it entirely as impossible). I have no other explanation

Gems can not be stolen or sold unless you sell non heroic gear with gems slotted.
