Im a lvl 44 Mage with a 28k BR. This is my first go at the new Cata, and im not seeing a way to kill her before she rages. am I missing something, or does it jus suck to be a mage for this?

Both mage and knight classes aren't the best for 1 vs. 1 PvE, since all those events are all about DPS and as long as knights have some damage skills, mages got nothing really useful but Thunderer. Archers have a lot of strong 1 vs. 1 damage skills + nice utility for PvE (like IS or Bloodthirst).
Once mage starts using crit build, he does better: more damage and some crit heals with a little luck, but usually needs more BR than archer to clear certain levels.
