i prefer level 9 or 10 toughness for mage deff and you need reskill to get flame shield V and depp freze V to get magic attack high

Soul of ice is a good choice to start with. since they provide defense which mage need the most. >_>"..then focus on attack.

Soul of Ice - Increases of Defense
Soul of Brilliance - Increases your MATK, Casting Speed and Crit (so you can kill people easily especially in seng)
Soul of Void - meh just skip this unless you want more crits
Soul of Light - The Most Important Soul for Mages which you'll need. Gives you more intellect and damage
