I let the guard attack me while I open the chest. Once I have the item, then I attack.

But then again I do have a pretty high ice soul (defense) and I'm a hybrid priest so I have the passive healing to help me.

Betcha the original poster is pointing out that the chest is gone, yet the guard still remains.
