best gems for your equipment?????

i was wondering about gems???? as far as your equipment it may say " HP ; MATK/PATK ; MDEF/PDEF " as it's main attribute and then have some attributes under that. my question is when I attach a gem to a piece of equipment will the gem do more good if it is the type the equipments main attribute is or one of the ones in green that eventually I can refine....
