Once you hit level 35 you should have a quest that will teach you how to use soul engraving.

It increases the gems effect you have socket in to your items by a percentage.

It boosts your socketed gem stats by a percentage. Every time a new soul engraving lvl is reached the percentage boost increases.

So if you have a lvl 3 PATK gem socketed into your weapon that adds 84 bonus PATK to your stats, and your soul engraving lvl is at 5 (10% bonus), then your socketed gem boost would be 8.4 (rounded down to 8, I believe) for that lvl 3 PATK gem, bringing your bonus PATK stats for that particular gem to 92.
