I have observed that most player usually goes for ATTACK rate (PATK/MATK). While ATK rate impacts damage, DEFENSE rate assure "survivability".
My Mage has lower attack rate compared to those of my level. One reason I dont go for an all out ATTACK is to take care of my DEFENSE (MDEF/PDEF) as well. The thing is, in group arena, my toon may have lower damage rate, but usually I survive 2 or 3 turns longer. This means I do more damage over all in one fight.
I think this is the same reason knights do well. They can survive longer because the DEFENSE component built in the knight. High Hp. High PDEF. Reduce Damage. Doing damage in "all" turns (Reverse Damage doing some accumulated damage while it's also the opponents turn to attack.).
