I have a friend in s2 and she has 98k at lvl 70 with no cash spent at all

Keep in mind you can get lv. 9 gem transposers for free from Tormented Necropolis level 10 boss. Non-cashers can then synthesize sufficient gems of lower levels directly into lv. 9 gems (so no need to have the balen-purchased transposers).

No, for every gem lvl you'll need a transposer or else everyone will just buy a lvl 9 transposer and not any below that.

It allows you to use the craft button. Which takes as many gems as is required to make a level 9 gem.
