The United States of AMERICA is the only country within the boundaries of the two continents you mentioned which actually utilizes America in it's proper name. Add to this the fact that it is referred to by most of the rest of the world as America and it's citizens official Nationality as recognized by the rest of the world is American and not "United Statians". These are all fairly compelling reasons why "America", used without a prefix denoting cardinal direction, refers directly to a country.
