This question seems pertinent, what happens if synthesis fails? Does my clothing go away? Or just the shard I used?

No it doesnt go away. it may change skin though (good thing with the dressing room).

It seems to me any clothes you synth you lose even though you can still wear them, to synth again you have to repurchase same items again
