is it even possible to unlock normal hard and nightmare? even with the big guys i've never seen past #5 on easy

It is possible, but extremely difficult to do. Generally, you'd need at least 2 extremely powerful (and paid or old) characters in your party to do so.

The last time I had passed Normal difficulty, took a party of 3 in excess of 80k BR each. That team has yet to even think of Hard difficulty...

All you need is time to get the mount, bout beating normal, hard i assume you are from any new server so only time (and money of course) will tell when will your top players be able to beat normal, hard and even get people through.
