How do I switch characters?

The "characters" are just skins. You can change the appearance of your team by clicking on the Friend icon at the bottom of your screen, then selecting the Appearance tab at the top of the Friend panel. Click on one of the 4 big tiles at the top, and then select the appearance you wish to use from the small tiles down below.
