I will be away on vacation and unable to access my account during that time. Is there any way to put the account on hold so that I am not killed while away?

No vacation mode exists, but a number of protective measures are available for periods of time when you might not be available.
In the Rookery, you can set a friend or trusted alliance member as your protector for 7 days, and they'll be able to set an 8 or 24 hour truce on you to keep you from being attacked. Make sure you find someone who will reliably keep you bubbled. It's a good idea keep a protector set even if you're not planning to go away, just in case.
You can also buy a 7 day or 14 day truce with blue diamonds if you don't have someone you can trust or don't want to worry about it at all.
