It does matter when you pick them up, else they'd disappear. Unless your AFK setting is on, you need to actively pick up any loot that falls. If you are attempting to loot items with your space bar, I can see why that's not working for you.

maybe someone is confusing space bar (looting) with '.' (AFK mode) XD
