Make sure that you and your friend are on the same server for you to see each other. Difference? If the version is the same then most likely everything is the same

Just adding to Mark's post. If you are on the same server as your friend, perhaps you and your friend are on different instances.
In the image im currently on L3 (Instance 3). You can tell which instance you are on by looking at your minimap and seeing what L is shown.
To change your instance click the 'LX' (X being a number from 1 to 10) on the minimap (Circled in Red in the image).
Then a popup should come out giving you options to switch instance.
Mark was here so was the Boogeyman: I really intended to miss this part . I knew I can count on you my friend.
