Fragarach Forge Upgrading

I read something in the forums that when you upgrade your fragarach weapon, for example, from Earthen I to Earthen II that the socketed gems will not disappear. But if I upgrade it to Earthen VII to Superior I, will the socketed gems still be in the weapon afterwards? or will it disappear? Thx in advance.

You could always test it out with a chipped gem
