There's no difference really, and there's no such thing as one gender being better than another. As far as I know there's no difference between skill learning across the two.
Gender is for breeding. If you want to breed the pet (i.e. make it gen 2, gen 3, etc) you need to have one to be male and another to be female. Otherwise there is no significant difference between them.(S56)TpstT
