While I can see how in game moderators could be helpful at times, it would be a job that really is no fun. Favoritism would/could be an issue. (Even if its really not happening there would always be those who complain that there is.) Imagine if a person was a GM. Worked long and hard to make their character great. Kicked butt in PVP areas, Ruled at LG ect. How much of the server would say it was because they "had help" cause they where a mod? Or what if a bunch of GMs/Mods who happened to like to play together made a guild and the guild again was strong and ruled? How many would cry favoritism then? It would be a giant mess of pointing fingers..
As Zero said ~ Most moderators play the game, and just choose to not make themselves known. However they are always watching and when needed alert the GM Gods that there is a issue that GMs need to come and take care of. Personally the best thing to do is behave as if you are always being watched. You never know who truely is watching you.

Woohoo! Paranoia time ^_^ But like pixette said, favoritism can and does happen with in-game mods a lot of the time. I know the game I used to play had more issues with in-game mods than the number that actually liked/enjoyed them (especially one who was ridiculously good at a mini-game...). Just keep your eyes open, and use tickets/forums to help the GMs whenever possible.

Actually on Gamedp we do have in game player staff who moderate chat and the like making the game a more harmonious place in general. We've also had people leave R2 for us because they like the fact that chat's actually regulated, something that paid staff are often unable to do. The role of Game Helper on Gamedp involves helping players with questions they have in world chat and also enforcing chat rules when people break them, muting if necessary as well as coming up with forum event ideas.

Now, the first may sound like something any Average Joe can do, right? While that's true, how many times do people actually do it consistently? Having people who are designated game helpers means that help is always guaranteed to be available.

Secondly rules in world chat? Yes, that's not such a silly idea. Everyone speaks or understands English to some degree. Instead of having a lot of people all talking in different languages making communication difficult, having a rule for English only in world chat means that people are able to understand each other better and people don't feel left out if there's a conversation going on for ages in a language they don't understand. It also means that people flaming over being killed in GR or whatever is nipped in the bud and people are told to take it to whispers.

As for forum events, takes some of the work off the staff to have people who are able to plan something out in full and just run the idea past them rather than having to sift through 200+ half baked ideas and try to salvage something out of them.


It certainly works on Gamedp but I can understand the concerns about favouritism and drama. We're fortunate that there's little of that compared to other staff teams I've worked on, including paid ones.

I will not argue that it would be nice if World Chat was kept to English only ~ this has been a topic of great debate on my server ~ Many times over. I have suggested before that language tabs be added but without a proper way to be able to turn off/on the various chats this isnt really an option as it would only serve to make it even more cluttered. =/

But overall in game mods are not a good idea IMHO. Too much room for favoritism and even if R2 Paid them ~ well I dont think they could pay anyone enough to put up with that mess.
