If you can buy crystals with gold then what would you sell ingame to make gold? People will horde gold like no tomorrow, nothing will sell in player shops. The entire economy will crash.

Yeah. This is quite a good idea but for R2 is not giving them good benefits thus the game will goes down. R2 is also spending money to pay those moderators, game master and customer support to keep this game alive but if this will be implemented, R2 will lose some profits and game will soon die. Let us think that R2 is also doing a business for these while giving enjoyment to players.
