Mid, Bot, Top, Front, Back – The optimal party setup

When talking about the optimal party setup, the newbie misconception is that they need to set up their party once and that's it.
There are at least 4 different party setups to be used for different scenarios. Let's look at them one at a time.[/SIZE]
Commonly known as WB setup or World Boss setup, that's a particular case of the more common PVE setup... so why are we discussing this first? Because it's the one most new players have the biggest struggles with.
This setup is used for WB, GB, and Gauntlet. A few things to know:
So, the first thing we wanna do is equip a buff Aegis. Leo is the first buff Aegis we have access to, with Lybra being one of (if not the) best imho.
For example, in a 4-Ruby setup, that means: Claw BB, Blazing BM, Bones FM, Nereida FT.
This setup is a generalization of the WB setup, and will be used for Spire, Zodiac, Mission Dungeons, Erebus, Inferno...
Virgo is my Aegis of choice here, given the usually high HP of the enemies, but pretty much anything works.
This time we want to use 3 front no matter what, as if we go with an Halo-friendly setup, our FM hero will eat the focused fire of mid and bot enemies, and die much faster than he could.
The common mistake in PvP is use a “fixedâ€, Halo-friendly setup. PvP varies from opponent to opponent, so take those few seconds to watch Details before attacking in CoM, Arena, Domination and Raiders.
Before we get started, a couple assumptions:

Mid, Bot, Top, Front, Back – The optimal party setup

~ The WB setup ~
Commonly known as WB setup or World Boss setup, that's a particular case of the more common PVE setup... so why are we discussing this first? Because it's the one most new players have the biggest struggles with.
This setup is used for WB, GB, and Gauntlet. A few things to know:
- the enemy we will be facing hits in this order: front mid (FM), front bot (FB), front top (FT); back mid (BM), back bot (BB), back top (BT).
[IMAGE: order or death in wb]
- the enemy is immune to debuffs.
So, the first thing we wanna do is equip a buff Aegis. Leo is the first buff Aegis we have access to, with Lybra being one of (if not the) best imho.
Second, we wanna put ourselves in BT position. No questions asked. We're the ones doing the most dmg, we NEED to die last.[IMAGE: ourselves in bt position]
Third, it's irrelevant wether we use 3 front or 3 back, so let's be as Halo-friendly as possible: 2nd strongest dmg hero in back bot, 3rd strongest in back mid, most worthless one in front mid (note: this one will die before using skill, unless it's Bones!), and 2nd most worthless in front top, unless there's a better use of the different Halo bonuses. For example, in a 4-Ruby setup, that means: Claw BB, Blazing BM, Bones FM, Nereida FT.

Another example, a starter one with 3 heroes: Zwei FT, Rose FB, Mermaid FM, ourselves on the proper Halo in the back.[IMAGE: starter wb setup]
~ The PvE setup ~
This setup is a generalization of the WB setup, and will be used for Spire, Zodiac, Mission Dungeons, Erebus, Inferno...
- monsters hit in the same way as Bosses, but are far more in numbers, and are not immune to debuffs.

The proper disposition of heroes, and yourself, depends on your class (for those who have a 60 row AoE skill) and the enemies you're facing: for example, Spire has 3 enemies mid, so you want your best tank in FM, while in Zodiac it's important to position yourself to hit the Avatar asap.~ The PvP setup ~
The common mistake in PvP is use a “fixedâ€, Halo-friendly setup. PvP varies from opponent to opponent, so take those few seconds to watch Details before attacking in CoM, Arena, Domination and Raiders.
Before we get started, a couple assumptions:
- One hero dies every turn, and Angel kills everything except main heroes. That's true in most of the pre-61 cases, and even most Bones can't tank a skill crit to the face. If you can't oneshot opponent heroes, but he can oneshot yours, chances are you'll lose anyway, and vice-versa
- The opponent has more Agi than us: if we're fighting against som1 with lower BR, setup is mostly irrelevant, so we're assuming a stronger enemy, hence more Agi.
Now, in PvP you want to do two things:
- Position yourself directly in front of your opponent (so if he's BB, you take BT – it's flipped! – and vice-versa).
- Try to position your most important frontline hero so that he only faces one opponent, if possible (that's typically Claw for me, since his skill hits the opponent and it's paramount that he casts it, in FT spot, unless the opponent is in BB)
[IMAGE: claw in the ft spot, unless enemy in bb]
- Have 3 front lines.
Why? Well let's see how this setup works against the Halo-friendly one.
1st turn: he kills (with skill) a frontline (my frontline choice for this suicidal role is Nereida, since i use an HP-PDEF-MDEF-DODGE-BLOCK gems setup on her and she's the most likely to survive/revive. Also, ensuring Bones survives first turn and uses skill, pretty much guarantees I will be able to kill his last frontline thanks to his help); you kill (with skill) a frontline.
2nd turn: he kills 2nd frontline; you kill last frontline.[IMAGE: fight simulation 2 turn]
3rd turn: he kills last frontline; you hit face (you still have the eventual Skill/Partner/Finisher/Nereida bonus!).[IMAGE: fight simulation 3 turn]
4th turn: he uses skill on your face; you use skill on his face.[IMAGE: fight simulation 4 turn]
- If you're not positioned in front of him, you hit another backline instead of him of 3rd turn
- If u don't have 3rd frontline, you're both hitting each other's face at 3rd turn (and you end up casting skill with 125 rage on turn 4th, such a waste)
