I have had 2 return awards buttons appear (maybe on 2 different servers but 4 hours (at least) apart), which when pressed say invalid and give no rewards? anyone else? Obviously you can't do screenshots as it has gone............

Can't say why it would say 'invalid'. Had you been off the servers for a period of time? They could possibly have a time limit on them.
I only just collected one myself just yesterday, so I know they do indeed work. They no longer go to your inventory, but gives a system message of how many bound balen is credited (between 50 - 500), and has a pop up showing who has returned.
If it happened on your main character(s), please ask your guildies to see if it happened to them also. Please double check your bound balen to see that it hadn't increased.
If all else fails, send a ticket giving the time stamp as to when you 'collected', and they should ne able to see if you received it or not.Retired Moderator.
