I'm kind of confused as to what we are supposed to be attempting to achieve? Does the server just kind of go on forever?

Pretty much. There is no real end goal in game. You basically hit the 4th and sit there and build up over time. So only events/game actions are all towards giving those that play mats to grow their gear and hero's. It is a very specific economy driven setup and its up to people on server to decide how they want to spend that time. However game by this time becomes totally boring. You fight players or NPC or a mix, but in any case it's all the same: send troops to attack or defend and depending on which you fight (pvp or npc) you take same old tactic then rinse and repeat.
