Dispatched troops

Question: someone is dispatched to defend a city. You take the 2 towns and 2 sentries around said city. This cuts off access to the city. You then attack the city to take it. What happens to the dispatched troops? Do they just die and end dispatch? Or do they attack the town blocking their path to the city?

they stop once the city or person runs out of troops, if there's no route they discontinue can't just blow through a route if its not open!
